Malawi: Catholic church accuses Chakwera of bad leadership
According to the church, Malawi hasn’t made the needed progress since Chakwera came into office in the past four years.
In a statement, the Catholic Bishops said Malawians “have witnessed a glaring failure of leadership”.
“Most Malawians fail to see anybody in the current government who cares about them or can improve their situation,” they added.
The 16-page pastoral letter titled “The Sad Story of Malawi” accused the government under Chakwera of unfulfilled campaign promises, nepotism and rampant corruption.
“It is essential to ask of candidates, what their record of service has been, what they are capable of doing, before voting for them – not who they are or where they come from or what connections they have,” the letter from the church mentioned.
The church justified its public criticism by saying all private attempts to engage with Mr Chakwera failed.
Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu reacted to the church’s letter by saying the government would avoid responding to the letter.
“Instead we will not get tired of utilising engagements we do have with the clergy from time to time,” Mr Kunkuyu said.
Lazarus Chakwera was sworn in as President of Malawi in 2020, defeating the then-incumbent Peter Mutharika in a re-run election.
Other opposition parties backed Chakwera with his vice president being Mutharika’s previous vice, Saulos Chilima.
